I painted this when I was 22, during a time of significant personal upheaval. After a breakup with my live-in girlfriend, I moved back to Denver. My career trajectory was shifting, and even my best friend of 20 years distanced themselves. This piece is deeply rooted in the emotional and physical fallout of that relationship—capturing the raw essence of love, physical trauma, and the painful mix of emotional and verbal abuse intertwined with sexual gratification.

At the time, I had just begun exploring color theory through a series of classes. Though applied in a rudimentary way, this marked the beginning of a shift in my approach to color, evolving naturally out of my robot series. There’s also a noticeable influence from graphic novels, especially in the way I highlighted different shapes, giving the piece a distinct, almost illustrated quality.
